Project Name: hydroMetallurgical Tech for Interregional Urban Mining Project

Acronym: METIUM

Project ID: 101228150

Call: I3-2024-INV2a (Interregional Innovation Investments Strand 2a)

Duration: 2025 – 2027

METIUM builds the first EU interregional innovation ecosystem by scaling four cross-border Strategic Raw Materials (SRM) value chains. By deploying cutting-edge hydrometallurgical technologies as a reliable alternative to pyrometallurgy, the project focuses on the recovery of Li-ion battery materials, Platinum Group Metals, Rare Earth Elements, and Copper/Aluminium waste. The project aims to demonstrate efficient interregional processing of 3,200 kg of waste products to recover up to 11 different SRMs. The project aims to demonstrate efficient interregional processing of 3,200 kg of waste products to recover up to 11 different SRMs. Through this collaboration, METIUM strengthens Europe’s open strategic autonomy by reducing dependence on external suppliers of critical materials. Furthermore, the project fosters regional development by connecting less developed regions with innovation hubs, effectively turning industrial waste into valuable resources for a green and circular economy.

Consortium: The METIUM consortium consists of 19 partners from 8 European regions (Poland, Slovakia, Finland, Portugal, Lithuania, Greece, Spain, Slovenia, and Italy), led by the Coordinator: Lukasiewicz – Instytut Metali Niezelaznych (Poland).
